What I Liked:
I appreciated the beautiful scene building that nicely drew in all the senses. I found the easy banter and exchange of morbid puns between the main character, Florence, and the love interest, Ben, quite humorous.

What I Didn’t Really Like:
It was a little odd that there was so much build-up of sexual tension and even some decent dirty talk and then the actual sexual act is largely glossed over with some poetic language that left me wondering what happened. I also really wanted something awful to happen to Florence’s ex-boyfriend. To me, it felt like that was a lose end that didn’t get resolved in the story.

Overall:
I thought the plot was cute. It wasn’t overly complicated, but the author used the lack of action to explore the heavy emotions of feeling lost in life and navigating complicated family dynamics. I was able to guess the outcome easily, but it didn’t necessarily detract from my enjoyment of the Florence’s journey. The Dead Romantics was very well written, but there were just a few minor things that held me back from giving it a full five stars. That will not stop me from looking out for future releases from Ashley Poston.
