Heat Rating:
After Raihn betrayed her at the end of the Kejari, Oraya is his prisoner queen. He claims it's the only way to keep her safe, but she'll find any advantage to try to ensure a better future for her people, human and vampire.

What I Liked:
I really enjoyed seeing the character development of both Oraya and Raihn and getting glimses of the past events that made them who they are. I feel like the story had really good balance between world building, character development, and action. It’s a dark story but even when things appear hopeless, it didn’t feel too heavy.

What Bothered Me:
I want to know why Nessanyn chose to stay with Neculai. The topic of Raihn’s past with her feels slightly unresolved.

Overall:
If you like epic dark fantasy series, you should check out the Crowns of Nyaxia. I was super close to giving The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King five stars. At 626 pages, it’s a bit longer than I prefer, so as much as I like it, I’m not sure I will have the urge to re-read it. I will absolutely be reading subsequent books in the series as they come out. Six Scorched Roses is a related novella that is already on my list.
