What I Liked:
It was so easy to get engrossed in a magical version of Victorian England that Charlie Holmberg created. It was a new take on how spells are created and broken and then interwoven with a historical romance and completed with the intrigue of a secret society. Even without any steamy scenes, it easily held my attention.
What I Didn’t Really Like:
The female protagonist’s recurrent belief that there must be something inherently wrong with her that causes people to leave her sometimes felt at odds with Elsie’s strong, independent nature. I think it would have sat with me better if she rationally knew that was not the case, but a part of her felt that way.
Overall:
If you are a fan of romance classics and fantasy, this is the perfect book for you. I can’t wait to read the second book, Spellmaker.
