What I Liked:
I loved the quirky elements, like a baby goat wearing pajamas and a pig named Kevin Bacon, that helped lighten up what otherwise is a really heavy storyline.
What I Didn’t Really Like:
It’s silly really, but the portrayal of Hunter the dog bothered me. I have a dog of that same breed with the same training and he would never act like that. Yes, dogs have individual personalities, but Hunter would certainly not be typical of the breed.
Overall:
I wasn’t in the best of moods when I read this book, so that could be a contributing factor, but I struggled with this one. I appreciate the underlying purpose of bringing awareness to the multiple forms of abuse that exist in our world, but I think the balance of the book felt a little off. Alexis experiences emotional abuse from multiple directions, some of her friends are super negative and judgmental, and she helps a woman in a physically abusive relationship. I get that a lot of things in her life need to be that awful to help her decide to force a change, but it was still not the easiest thing to read. Will this prevent me from reading other books by Abby Jimenez? Absolutely not!
