As a 16-year-old theif in the slums, Vin takes her beatings without complaint knowing the alternative is being sold to brothel. Her miserable existence changes when the enigmatic Kelsier barges into her life with a plan to overthrow the tyrant ruler of the Final Empire. Vin learns what it's like to be a part of crew that's as close to a family as she's ever experienced, even if their task is absolutely insane.

What I Liked:
I enjoyed the unique system of magic/powers that was developed for Mistborn. It took a little while grasp the nuances of the rules but it felt natural for the reader to learn about everything at the same time as the mentee character. As a romance fan, I enjoyed the romantic tension between Vin and her nobleman crush.

Fair Warning:
The Final Empire is a brutal world and people (many people) do die.

Overall:
I’ll be honest. I read Mistborn on the recommendation of my friend’s husband. It’s not something I would have picked myself, but I am glad I read it. As a typical epic fantasy, it’s on the longer side and part of a trilogy, but the ending was amazing. It resolves the primary conflict of the book and leaves just enough anticipation about what will happen in the future that the reader can decide whether to pick up the next book or not without being driven insane.
