What I Liked:
I felt like I got to know the main female protagonist, Celaena, so much better in the third book of the Throne of Glass series. It’s a little dark at times, but getting a sense of her hopelessness makes her rise from the depths of her misery so much more meaningful. I also loved the tension and ambiguity surrounding her relationship with her trainer Rowan.
What I Didn’t Really Like:
Maybe it will become clear later in the series, but I didn’t really see the point of how the book ended with Dorian’s new love interest, Sorscha. Their relationship feels kind of hollow even though he seems to want to a future with her. I really wanted to like Sorscha and thought she might become a bigger character, but her purpose might be limited to someone Dorian could go to because Celaena was on another continent and things were still tense with his best friend, Chaol.
Overall:
Heir of Fire reinvigorating me in the Throne of Glass series. I loved the first book, but lost a bit of steam on the second. That was not the case with the third. I didn’t want to put this one down and finished it in a couple of days, despite it being almost 600 pages. There wasn’t tons of action, but the whole book felt like it was building to something epic, so I didn’t mind. Even the chapters from the perspective of the ruthless witch Manon Blackbeak kept the story moving. I am sincerely hoping she ends up switching to the good side of things, because I liked her so much. The overall theme seemed to be looking at the major players in the story and examining the motivation behind their decisions and actions, because they all have their reasons even if they are not easy to understand on the surface.
