What I Liked:
The title and cover art are very enticing. I love the premise of a world where magic can be obtained through specially harvested and prepared food. Each chapter begins with an excerpt from a cook book in the world the author created. Most of the little snippets seem to relate to something within the chapter, but I didn’t always catch it.
What I Didn’t Really Like:
I think that someone that is more familiar with French and has at least a bit of a culinary background would enjoy all of the references that are woven into the story and help build the world’s setting. Unfortunately, that’s not me.
Overall:
I didn’t really get into this book until around the 60% mark, but then I enjoyed the read. I couldn’t tell you exactly why I struggled with the beginning. One reason may have trouble related to the main characters, Ada and Solenn, that were middle-aged and only 16, respectively. Maybe it will remain a mystery of Gyst, God of the Unseen and the Unknown. The next book doesn’t come out until January 2024, so I’ll probably give it a shot then.
